ICT4iCity is an ‚Impulse Project’ designed to investigate Information and Communication Technology (“ICT”) aspects for smart city initiatives. Its overarching goal: safe capture, combination, preparation, analysis, and usage of data that offer added value for an open, intelligent city. The breadth of relevant data for an intelligent city can range from geodata for the environment and civil/structural engineering, to geometrical data (such as 3D city models) of objects and buildings, to data on IoT (Internet of Things). Novel radio technologies like 5G and LoRa are replacing current communication networks for data transmission. This project will investigate the potential of these technologies for IoT and localization in buildings and cities, and the capability to offer heterogenous databases of a city via open interfaces and standards like the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Moreover, the rising volume of data increasingly demands more automated processing with new methods like deep learning, to ensure efficient usage of the data collected. To address the heightened need for information in an intelligent city, new services must be offered in public buildings and spaces, while ensuring that IoT data are usable by citizens and public institutions.

The subproject “Urban Data Platform” is developing a new data infrastructure. It uses OGC’s open interfaces for standardized access to a heterogeneous database, and incorporates sensor data and 2D and 3D geospatial data. External partners involved in this project include virtualcitySYSTEMS (Berlin) and the Urban Structure Visualization Promotion Organization (Fukuoka, Japan). |
